Chronos

Chronos was a drug created by Leon Von Alvensleben for the New Mecca government in order to create super soldiers for the NULL project. Chronos provides the NULL soldiers with limited precognition, allowing them to preplan the outcomes of combat. It also allows for them to slow their perception of time and rewind time to a certain point.

However, Chronos has severe side effects, including vivid hallucinations. If a Chronos user goes through withdrawal, they not only die a painful death, but are also stuck inside of a time loop within their minds, stuck in eternal agony as they relive the moment of their death again and again.

Notes

  • Chronos is a light blue liquid administered via injection
  • Though it is stated that those on Chronos can see the future, there are two instances in-game that suggest this isn't the case: When V knocks out Zero using a booby-trapped door in the Mansion mission, and when Headhunter and Zero clash in the Chinatown mission, cancelling out each other's Chronos predictions.
  • If the player allows the timer at the top of the screen to run out during a level, the screen will flash red until Zero dies. The death message will remark "I can't remember all of this. I have to be more efficient." This suggests Chronos would potentially allow Zero to see the future even further, but he would not be able to use the information without forgetting it.
  • It is mentioned in the Dragon Tape that there are very few entities that have the resources to manufacture Chronos.
  • A cutscene during the Mansion mission suggests that V and SNOW's employer is interested in learning how to make Chronos, which is why they kidnapped and interrogated the Factory scientist and Al-Qasim.
  • According to an Akiisoft blogpost, a NULL soldier's level of Chronos dependence depends on their rank, with Alpha NULL being able to skip doses with minimal symptoms, while Gamma NULL need to take Chronos up to twice a day.
  • Chronos is the Greek word for "time" ("πρύμνη"), and the name of its ancient Greek personification (Not to be confused with Cronus, the ancient Greek god of the harvest and the seasons).
